Yoboseyo!

November 20th, 2009 by Alan Okami

It's a comin', heading into Kalihi soon. We all know those delectable Korean side orders. The tasty meat or vegetable filled dumplings known as mandoo. Heck, some of your may even order your plate lunch with mandoo as the main dish. All in all, I think I would be hard pressed not to find a fan out there.

Mr. Mandoo. I heard about it on the Twitter network and just had to see what all the fuss is about. Mind you, I am fussy about my mandoo. Been to Mandoo Lady, Korean restaurants galore and I always have a few at the least.

Here's the skinny - not your typical mandoo. These are similar to Chinese bao. Mr. Mandoo carefully preps various ingredients and fills them into soft and tasty bread shells. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical of these seemingly "imposter" manapua. We took them out to inspect at home. To my delight, I could taste and see the meticulous preparation of the ten billion ingredients that are usually in each morsel. I was not disappointed.

It's a cute little shop, located on Piikoi, just up the street from KHON and immediately before one of my other faves, Restaurant Ichiriki. The nice lady behind the counter is the neice of the owner.

Why this post? Rumour has it they are heading to Kalihi soon. Targeted location nearby Tamashiro Market, where Queen's BBQ is/was. Mmmm, looking forward to it.

One word of caution, the spicy is indeed spicy. My macho spicyman attitude got me thinking, "No Problem!," but I was a little too confident. Luckily for me, I have a Menehune Water Tower in my house. For now, check them out over in the Ala Moana area and help support this small business.

    M,
Is good. Little different from what we all expect, but good nontheless. The signs are cute and the place is charming. All part of the experience.

    Just providing my biased $0.02

Its "okay" to try.....but I don't plan on going back. I bought 4 and the total cost was $12???? 2 Kal Bi's and 2 Kogi.

Don't get me wrong, its "okay" but since it reminded me so much of a char siu bao (manapua)...the idea of $3 each was hard to stomach as it wasn't something "to die for".

    Ocean Lover,
I respect your opinion. I have to admit that u was taken aback a little when I saw the menu. My wife warned me and was well warranted. Our box of 4 was same price. Not exactly the same $ as typical mandoo. I was intrigued though. Reminded me so much of the kind of shop you could expect to find in Japan (though Korean). Thanks for chiming in

  7. Ocean Lover:

Mahalo aokami! In my opinion its the kind of place you "try" and see if you become a repeat customer. To me.........."bleh". ;-)
